To Kister (two trunks)

Telemark Trunk--entry for 2011 Vesterheim National Rosemaling Competition.
The trunk is 12" high by 12" deep and 24" wide.
The inspiration for the design is from a Knut Mevasstaul trunk from 1856.(sold)

  2. Thank you! I did paint the background. I use acrylics for backgrounding and oils for rosemaling. I wanted it to look like a dark wooden trunk. But it's made of basswood so the only way to do that was to faux finish it.

  3. Interesting that you used the faux finish to simulate woodgrain. Traditionally, the background was painted in a solid colour wasn't it, because they did not want the design to compete with the straightness of the woodgrains. But in this piece there is no competition, it all comes together so well.

  4. I've seen pieces painted on darker wood but the grain is generally not prominent. I wanted a dark background for the trunk but it looked so plain that I added the grain wash. Thanks for writing!
